Easy Reads During Nap Time

Easy Reads During Nap Time

When my girls nap, it is so easy to use the whole time as a "catch up" on everything I have yet to get done for the day. I'm usually rushing to finish laundry, tidy my home or get a head start on dinner. Worse, there's an even greater temptation to sit on the couch and zone out online.

When I'm having a good day, I use the time to read or write--my favorite activities!! So, in the spirit of dedicating myself to reading more, here are some of my favorite easy reads for nap time, books that aren't too heavy and you can pick up and put down as many times as needed.

1. Yes, Please by Amy Poehler
I LOVE comedy writing, so if you're like me, I'd also include Tina Fey's Bossypants & Mindy Kahling's books as well. This is genius. It reads more like a series of vignettes, than a memoir. It is real, raw, authentic and absolutely hilarious. I haven't quite finished yet but I don't remember last time I laughed this much reading a book. It's so enjoyable that you don't want to put it down, but because if its short style, it's easy to pick back up and get into it again no matter how long it has been.

2. Everything that Remains by Millburn and Nicodemus
These are the writers featured on Netflix's hit documentary Minimalism. Their story is intriguing. Their writing is to the point and compelling. This is a great read that will inevitable add value to your life and help you think about what really matters, and perhaps the freedom that comes from letting go of materialistic ideals. It sounds heady, but it's not. It's also something that you'll be willing to revisit later.

3. A Good Man is Hard to Find by Flannery O'Connor
I'm not one to enjoy a lot of fiction reading. I much more enjoy nonfiction. But I know that's not everyone's cup of tea. O'Connor has a way of showing the hard truths and realities of the world. Her writing is engaging. It is not a low level of reading, but it is easy in the sense that it, along with most of her writings, is a short story and doesn't take too long to read. I find her writing to haunt me for days afterward in the best way. I find myself repeating her words as though I bore them myself.

4. ___________ for Dummies.
Now, I know this is a weird recommendation to put on a list. But I really want to encourage you all to spend time every day 1. learning something and 2. practicing something you love. Finding and enhancing skill brings joy and life and peace. I've been making it a point to do this with writing every day and I can't tell you how beneficial it has been. Nap time is some great time to yourself, use it well! The dishes can wait; the laundry can wait; the errands can wait; your social media can wait. Pick anything you've ever thought was cool but assumed you couldn't do, buy a "How To" book or guide, and get at it!
