DIY Upgrade Ikea Duktig Play Kitchen
As a labor of love for C & A's birthday present, we "renovated" their IKEA Duktig kitchen. We spent $99 on the Duktig kitchen itself and then around $30 more on supplies. Here's a little bit about the process:
First, Ryan sanded down the whole play kitchen and then put on a coat of white paint on each side, let it dry and then put on a second coat. We didn’t use any primer or coating on the sides and they have all held up very well the last year.
We spray painted the sink white and the rest of the finishes gold. We used a 2 in 1 primer plus paint spray paint. Everything has kept up well except for the sink.
For the backsplash we took white cardboard from Michaels and drew 3 x 5 tiles in the herringbone pattern. Then, we traced the pencil in permanent marker and applied an adhesive to stick it to the back of the kitchen.
We traded out the original microwave handle for a drawer pull we found at Home Depot
We also exchanged the oven handle. In the future, we want to install the oven door using a desk opener so it will actually pull down instead of being pulled to the side.
I found a lot of inspiration on pinterest for this project, and added a bit of my own flare. One of my favorite similar DIYs was my friend Kristie Gilmore's which you can read about on her blog here for a slightly different take.
